Our Approach

Straight Talk Before Anything Goes on Your Roof

A solar system is electrical equipment that will sit on your house for decades, so start with the rules. North Carolina treats residential solar PV as electrical work, and installations of any value require an electrical contractor licence, and an electrical permit is required whenever wiring or equipment changes. Every system we design is permitted and inspected through the Durham City-County Building & Safety Department at 101 City Hall Plaza before it is turned on.

The money picture has changed too: the federal 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit does not apply to expenditures made after December 31, 2025, and a system counts when installation is completed. Our proposals are priced on what applies now, not on an incentive that has ended.

The Utility Side

How Duke's Credit Rules Shape Your System

Most homeowners do not realize how much the utility side changed. Duke Energy's revised North Carolina residential net-metering riders took effect October 1, 2023. Under the newer option, new Duke Energy customers take Rider RSC, which credits monthly net exports at the utility's avoided-cost rate and requires a time-of-use rate with critical peak pricing. The alternative is the bridge rider, where the capacity-limited Net Metering Bridge rider runs for up to 15 years; both riders carry a monthly minimum bill.

What it means in practice: solar power you use at home is worth more to you than solar power you send to the grid. So instead of maximizing panels to bank credits, we size most Durham systems around daytime use and show you when a battery is worth adding.

If your home already has panels on the older rider, legacy Rider NM customers move to the Net Metering Bridge after December 31, 2026. We can walk you through what that change means for your account.

Local Know-How

Durham Roofs, Trees, and Neighborhoods

Durham's older neighborhoods are beautiful partly because of their trees. In Trinity Park, Watts-Hillandale, and Duke Park, tall canopy can shade a roof for part of the day, so we model shade honestly before recommending panels. Some roofs are better candidates than others, and we will tell you if yours is not.

Newer areas such as Croasdaile and Southpoint often have larger, less shaded roof planes that make layout simpler. Wherever you live, we check roof age first; putting panels on a roof that needs replacing soon only adds cost later.

The Piedmont's hot, humid summers and cool winters mean long cooling seasons, which is when panels produce most and when home power use runs highest.

Questions

Durham Solar Questions

How much does solar panel installation cost?

It depends on system size, roof, and equipment, so we quote after a site visit. Remember the federal 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit does not apply to expenditures made after December 31, 2025; a fair quote should not count that credit. Every price comes in writing.

Is solar battery storage worth it?

It is worth a careful look now that net exports are credited at the utility's avoided-cost rate. A battery lets you use your own solar power in the evening instead of exporting it. We show the numbers for your home and never promise savings.

How long does solar panel installation take?

The rooftop work is short. Permitting with the Durham City-County Building & Safety Department, inspection, and utility approval take longer, and we give you a realistic schedule for each.

Is solar panel installation free?

No. An owned system is paid for with cash or a loan; leases and power-purchase agreements are different deals. Whatever you choose, solar PV installations of any value require a North Carolina electrical contractor licence, so check the installer's licence.
