Solar Battery Storage in Durham, NC

Solar battery storage keeps the power your panels make so your Durham home can use it after sunset or when the grid goes down. We add batteries to new systems and existing ones in Durham, Chapel Hill, and Research Triangle Park.

Why Storage Matters Under the New Rules

Before the rule change, many solar owners treated the grid like a free battery. That is no longer how it works for new customers. Duke Energy's revised North Carolina residential net-metering riders took effect October 1, 2023, and new Duke Energy customers take Rider RSC, which credits monthly net exports at the utility's avoided-cost rate and requires a time-of-use rate with critical peak pricing.

The result is simple: exported power earns less than the power you buy back, and evening power can cost the most. A battery moves your own midday production into the evening, when the household is cooking, running the air conditioning, and charging devices.

Backup is the other reason. When a storm takes out power, a battery can keep the refrigerator, lights, internet, and other essentials running. In the Piedmont's hot, humid summers and cool winters, summer storms are a real consideration.

What a Battery Does

Evening power

Use stored solar instead of buying peak-priced power.

Outage backup

Keep essential circuits running during grid outages.

Less export

Keep more of what your panels produce.

Retrofit or new

Installed with a new system or added to existing panels.

The Process

Adding Storage

01

Review

Bills, panels, and what you want to keep powered.

02

Size

Capacity and backed-up circuits chosen to fit.

03

Permit

Electrical permit with the Durham City-County Building & Safety Department.

04

Install

Battery, gateway, and wiring installed, inspected, and set up.

Sizing Around Your Goals

Battery size depends on what you want it to do. Shifting solar into the evening needs less capacity than keeping a well pump, furnace fan, and refrigerator running through a long outage. We start from your list of must-have circuits and work out the capacity from there, never from a one-size package.

Adding storage works with new panels or existing ones. If you are planning solar panel installation, designing both together keeps wiring simple. If your panels are already up, we check the inverter and main panel to see how a battery connects.

Batteries are electrical equipment: North Carolina treats residential solar PV as electrical work, and installations of any value require an electrical contractor licence, and an electrical permit is required whenever wiring or equipment changes. Every battery we install goes through the Durham City-County Building & Safety Department at 101 City Hall Plaza.

Prices, Programs, and Straight Numbers

Battery cost depends on capacity, brand, and how much rewiring your home needs, so we quote after a visit. Ask us about Duke Energy battery programs; we will confirm what applies to your account rather than quote an amount we have not verified.

Keep taxes in view too: the federal 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit does not apply to expenditures made after December 31, 2025, and a system counts when installation is completed. If your existing system is on the older rider, legacy Rider NM customers move to the Net Metering Bridge after December 31, 2026, which may make storage worth a fresh look.

Batteries need occasional checks along with the panels; our solar panel repair service covers battery and inverter health.

Living With a Battery

Once installed, a home battery runs quietly in a garage or on an exterior wall. The app shows how much is stored, how much the house is using, and how much is going to or from the grid. You can usually choose a mode: maximize backup reserve, or use more of the battery every evening. We set it up with you and explain the trade-offs, and we adjust settings later if your needs change. Homeowners near American Tobacco Campus and in Northgate Park use the same tools.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a home solar battery work?

Panels charge it during the day; the house draws from it in the evening or during an outage. Since net exports are credited at the utility's avoided-cost rate, using stored power at home can be worth more than exporting it. Installs are permitted with the Durham City-County Building & Safety Department.

How much battery do I need?

It depends on what you want backed up and for how long. We list your must-run circuits and size from there. Because both riders carry a monthly minimum bill, we also show where a battery helps and where it does not.

Is a solar battery worth it?

Often more than before: Duke Energy's revised North Carolina residential net-metering riders took effect October 1, 2023, and exports now earn less. Results depend on usage, so we never promise savings.

How much does a home battery cost?

It depends on capacity and wiring; we quote after a visit. Ask us about Duke Energy battery programs, and remember the federal 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit does not apply to expenditures made after December 31, 2025.
