Start With the Roof
Before talking about panels, we look at what they will sit on. Orientation, pitch, shade, and roof age all decide whether solar makes sense and how much it can produce. A south- or west-facing plane with little shade is ideal, but east-facing roofs can work too. If the shingles are near the end of their life, replacing the roof first usually saves money, because removing and reinstalling panels later is extra work.
Shade gets an honest look. In tree-lined neighborhoods like Old West Durham and Walltown, a partly shaded roof can still work with the right inverter, but we will show you the expected output plainly rather than a best-case number.
Inside, we check your main electrical panel and where the inverter and disconnect will go. Some homes need a panel upgrade before connecting solar, and you should know that at the quote stage.

The Rules That Apply in Durham
Solar is electrical work under North Carolina law: North Carolina treats residential solar PV as electrical work, and installations of any value require an electrical contractor licence. An electrical permit is required whenever wiring or equipment changes, so every install is permitted with the Durham City-County Building & Safety Department at 101 City Hall Plaza and inspected before turn-on. When comparing companies, ask who holds the licence and who pulls the permit.
On the utility side, Duke Energy's revised North Carolina residential net-metering riders took effect October 1, 2023, and new Duke Energy customers take Rider RSC, which credits monthly net exports at the utility's avoided-cost rate and requires a time-of-use rate with critical peak pricing. The bridge rider is the other route, and both riders carry a monthly minimum bill. That is why we size systems to daytime use, and why many owners pair panels with solar battery storage.
And on incentives: the federal 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit does not apply to expenditures made after December 31, 2025. We will not show you a payback figure that depends on it.
Install Day and After
Clear the driveway for the crew, give us access to the attic and electrical panel, and let us know about pets or gate codes. On the roof, mounts are anchored to rafters and flashed, and every penetration is sealed before panels go on. Wiring runs to the inverter and a disconnect near the meter, labeled for the inspector and future service.
Once the system is approved and running, we set up the monitoring app with you so you can see daily production. If anything needs attention later, our solar panel repair team handles inspections, inverter faults, and cleaning, even on systems we did not install.
Homes near Duke Chapel and across Duke Park have steep, varied roofs; homes out toward Research Triangle Park tend to be simpler. Either way, the same careful process applies, from the first roof check to the final walkthrough of the monitoring app.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a solar install take?
The roof work is usually short. Permitting with the Durham City-County Building & Safety Department, inspection, and utility approval take longer; since an electrical permit is required whenever wiring or equipment changes, nothing is switched on until each step is signed off.
Will solar panels damage my roof?
They should not. We assess the roof first, anchor mounts to rafters, and flash every penetration. Older roofs in Trinity Park get extra attention, and if a roof is near the end of its life we say so before designing.
How should I prepare for install day?
Clear the driveway and give us access to the attic and main panel. Since solar PV installations of any value require a North Carolina electrical contractor licence, confirm your installer's licence before the crew arrives.
What is the solar installation process?
Assessment, design, permit, install, inspection, and utility approval. The permit and inspection go through the Durham City-County Building & Safety Department, and your credit rider depends on the rules in place since Duke Energy's revised North Carolina residential net-metering riders took effect October 1, 2023.
